Nonsurgical Methods to Relieve Sciatic Nerve Pain
More and more people today are experiencing sciatic nerve pain. This condition known as Sciatica is caused by extreme pressure being place on the sciatic nerve. This sciatic nerve runs from the lower part of the back and downward on the legs; it is one of the longest nerves in the body.
This sciatic nerve is what controls muscles in the lower part of the back and legs. Sciatic nerve pain begins when the lower portion of the spine that contains nerve roots become pressured or irritated. The pain can vary ranging from constant pain to infrequent bouts of pain. Some patients report feeling numbness in their legs or literally not feeling their legs at all.
Treatments for this type of nerve pain vary per patient. Some patients will respond well with treatment with other patients being placed on various limitations such as not carrying large objects or not bending down to pick up items.
One of my favorite forms of non surgical treatment for sciatic nerve pain is the use of ice packs and heat pads in the affected area. Ice packs are a wonderful cheap way to provide treatment and healing to your body. Applying ice reduces swelling in the affected area and increases blood flow which provides healing. Applying this treatment two to three times a day for 10 minutes can provide much needed sciatic nerve pain relief. After a period of two day, apply a heat pad once or twice a day to loosen the muscles in your back.
It is interesting to look at alternative non-surgical treatments that can also provide relief from sciatic nerve pain. Hip exercises and yoga have been helpful for some patients. Believe it or not, walking is one of the best ways to loosen up nerve and provide healing. It can be hard trying to straighten out, but over time this can be very helpful. Herbs can provide for natural pain relief. Devil’s claw and Artium Lappa contain natural ingredients that relax the muscles.
Lastly, changing your style of shoes can help in relieving sciatic nerve pain. Shoes that are soft and flat provide great support and prove comfortable for patients suffering from this painful condition. Sometimes, wearing the wrong style of shoe when suffering from this condition can cause your muscles to stiffen. This is why wearing the right style of shoes and daily exercise can help in maintaining the pain that occurs with sciatic nerve pain.
